Getting Started With Wired Desk

Wired Desk Admin Page

After you login to Wired Desk, you arrive at the Web Content Administration home page (Admin page). This page has all the options you need to manage the content in a website. The options are represented by the buttons. The first 3 buttons are for an Author to create and/or update content on the website. A picture of the "Admin" page is shown further down this page.

Create Update
This is the button to press for creating new web pages and also to update existing pages if you know what folder they are located in. When this button is pressed, you go to the top folder for the area of the website and the page type that you have selected in the pulldown lists located above this button.
Search Utility
This option takes you to a form to enter a search text to find a specfic web page or a set of web pages. Once you have found the page you want, then press edit for that page if you want to update it.
Your Work
This option takes you to the work you have done (pages created and updated by you) for the chosen website area and page type in the above pulldown lists on this "Admin" page. This feature saves you the effort of having to look for your current work by folder or through a text search.
Wired Desk Approver's Home Page

Approver Functions

If you have "Approval" privilege, there will be two more buttons, after the first three, which allow you to find new/updated web pages, done by the various authors in your editorial team, that need to be approved for live serving on your website. Of course, you will be able to approve your own work too.

Approve Work
On pressing this button, you are presented with a form giving you options on whose work to view, test and approve (one author or all authors), for what website areas (one or all) and for which page types (one or all).
Status Reports
Pressing this button takes you to a form similar to "Approve Work" where you select what to report on - website area, page type and author/s. This leads you to summary reporting, detailed reporting and a downloadable detailed spreadsheet report.

Library Functions

The next two buttons on the "Admin" page are for managing the content in the 5 different libraries. The libraries are indicated by the radio buttons and are listed below.

  • Picture Library
  • Document Library
  • Audio Library
  • Video Library
  • Table Library

One must click on the appropriate library radio button to choose which library you want to do work in. If you want to upload new pictures you must choose which website area(pulldown list at top of page) to upload into. Once decided, press on the relevant button listed below.

Upload New File
This button, when pressed takes you to a form for uploading new files of the type appropriate for the library chosen eg, GIF for the Picture Library, DOC for the Document Library, etc. This form gives you the ability to "upload" a file into the library for use on the website.
Manage File Library
This option takes you to a library search form to help you find items in the chosen library that you want to use/work on.

Test WIP and Approved Websites

The last two buttons on the "Admin" page are for touring the "Work-In-Progress" (WIP) website and the "Approved" (live content) website. This gives the benefit of random testing on the website, with the ability to check a page's status that you happen to be viewing and the option to edit this page as well.

View WIP Web Site
When pressed, a small control panel window appears on the upper right hand corner of your screen and a new browser window appears with the WIP website home page displayed. As you browse through the website the control panel is updated as to what page is on view. The control panel allows you to check a pages status, edit a web page and create a new web page in the same location as the current one.
View Approved Site
On pressing this option, a new browser window appears with the home page of the "Approved" website. This facility is important to confirm all work has been completed as expected and the new pages are appearing in the right places on the website.
